WHAT IS A COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER?

Photographers, we come with all different styles and genres, but ultimately are main goal is to make sure the client is happy and enjoys having their photo taken, or is happy with their product images. So, you may have heard of a wedding or a family photographer, the title gives away what the role is! However, what about a commercial or a branding photographer, what do they do? Essentially, a commercial photographer will help small or large businesses in creating beautiful imagery that they can then use to showcase their business and brand. This could be product images, images of the owner at work, or natural headshots!

WHY HIRE A BRANDING / COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER?

OK, so we’ve established what they do, but why hire them? A commercial / branding photographer comes with a wealth of experience, they understand how to manipulate the light to create a pleasing portrait, how to use flash when needed. They can move your beautiful product to highlight it with natural light, they can be discrete, with gaining images whist the business is running, (a crowded coffee bar is a challenge for anyone to document, make sure you give this job to someone who has the experience!) They have spent years buying equipment / attending courses to educate themselves and to hone in on their skills, becoming a master of their trade.

WHAT WILL I GET IN RETURN?

A really fun experience! Behind the lens is a person with a big heart, who wants your business to really flourish, and in creating beautiful imagery this will help your business to showcase the product / people behind the brand! Most commercial / branding photographers will allocate a certain amount of images within the package selected. Image usage will be given (sometimes with a license) and you can then share the images on your website and social media platforms!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU HIRE A COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER?

This is quite a subjective point, from a photographer perspective I would suggest every time you have a new product launch or a change in the season. For example, you may want images taken at Summer and also at Christmas if your product / business has seasonal changes. However, this may not suit every business. If you run a hair and beauty business, new images annually may be more appropriate. Ultimately there is no wrong or right answer, if you build a good relationship with your photographer, then they can advise you on the best time for new images / headshots for new staff, and they may also offer a cheeky discount for repeat clients!
